Fight for independence: IG Metall defends itself against the takeover of SZAG!

On November 5, 2024, explosive news caused a stir: GP Günther Papenburg AG and TSR Recycling GmbH are planning a takeover offer for the shareholders of Salzgitter AG! Your goal? To gain control of 45 percent of the shares of Salzgitter AG plus one share. A huge step that could turn the future of the company upside down!

The IG Metall representatives from the Salzgitter AG companies in Salzgitter, Peine and Ilsenburg are outraged! They firmly reject this plan and emphasize that Salzgitter AG's success is the result of the hard work of its employees. “With the ‘Steel is the Future’ campaign, we gave the steel industry a face and fought for fair competitive conditions,” they explain. This transformation towards CO2-free steel production was only possible thanks to the commitment of the employees. “We are the key to successful transformation, not profit-driven family businesses!”

Demands on those responsible

The shop stewards demand a clear commitment to independence from the board of Salzgitter AG! Control over raw materials, energy and the disposal of residual materials must remain under our own control. They also require the supervisory board to take a unanimous position against the takeover. “Neither the current owners nor the employees can trust that Salzgitter AG will continue to exist in its current form after a takeover,” they warn. The company's diverse positioning in the areas of steel production, technology and services ensures economic stability, even in times of crisis.

The IG Metall shop stewards also make an urgent appeal to the state government of Lower Saxony: "It must take a clear political stance against the takeover plans! The interests of the employees must not take a backseat to individual capitalist interests." This responsibility extends beyond state borders, as the state government's self-interest could also be at stake if the takeover goes ahead. "The products at Salzgitter AG will continue to be made by people in the future. These people are the backbone of our success and need real participation in all crucial decisions," is the urgent appeal of the shop stewards.
