Traffic chaos in the Alpine region: What distances does the vacationer be on?
Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - On March 1, 2025, travel from Bavaria led to massive congestion developments in Western Austria. The ÖAMTC already reported streets overloaded in the early morning, the long -distance pass route (B179) in Tyrol was particularly affected, where block handling was set up at the border tunnel Füssen. This led to considerable delays on the way to Reutte, while waiting times of around 30 minutes were reported on the Bavarian side near Kiefersfelden. In Salzburg, the construction site area between Golling and Throw turned out to be another conifer with up to 10 kilometers of traffic jams. Also in Vorarlberg there was a storming traffic on Arlberg Schnellstraße (S16) between Bludenz and Dalaas in the direction of travel, as the ÖAMTC reported.
In addition, the newly introduced dosing campel in the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district was brought into play to regulate alternative traffic. According to District Administrator Josef Niedermaier, it is a joint project with the Tyroleans, which aims to promote traffic jams and tolls north of the highways. This measure was carried out as a test on the two Saturdays of the carnival holidays, whereby data was collected to analyze the effectiveness of the traffic lights. Niedermaier and district captain Michael Brandl appeal to travelers to refrain from supposed alternative routes. The highway toll is not high in relation to the costs of a ski vacation, says Brandl. While some vacationers expressed understanding of the measure, others considered the dosing lamps to be nonsense, which only shifted the problem, as the surveys of the BR-Studio Rosenheim showed.
Overall, it can be seen that travel traffic and the associated measures for traffic regulation in the region are increasingly complex challenges. The first experiences with block handling and the dosing ambulaos may lead to further adjustments in traffic management in the future in order to improve the situation for both vacationers and the local population.
