Freya Mertel has been working on the city of Amberg's building department for six months and has dealt with a central topic: sustainability. Her role as a coordinator for sustainability issues is essential for the future design of the city. In the last meeting of the environmental committee, Mayor Michael Cerny emphasized that this is a “large bundle of tasks” that requires different priorities.

The young manager brings an impressive professional vita. Before she came to Amberg, she was actively in different social projects and gained experience that she can probably use in her current position.

A committed career

After graduating from high school in Franconian Bad Windsheim, Freya Mertel completed a voluntary social year in Thailand. There she worked in a women's shelter and in a kindergarten as part of a church organization. This time has shaped her sustainably. "The many impressions there were very formative. I want to help that the world will be a little better," she reports.

After studying international economy and development in Bayreuth, in combination with commitment to the Ethiopia aid "People for People" and a semester abroad in Jordan, she initially decided to go to development aid. Instead, she completed an apprenticeship as a project manager and sustainability manager.

Now she brings a breath of fresh air to the Amberg city administration. With clear ideas, she plans various projects to improve the environment in the city's own framework. Her goals include the implementation of a "blue-green infrastructure" concept, which aims to create water systems to avoid flooding and sealing areas.

Particularly noteworthy are the funding programs that the city of Amberg already addresses in the online presence. This includes initiatives for cargo bikes, emission -free mobility and a scrappage bonus for old household appliances. Freya Mertel is also involved in the municipal heat planning of the municipal utilities and the energetic renovation concept of the Luitpoldhütte.

Her commitment to sustainable urban development is clear and a necessary step in the right direction, especially for a city that wants to remain resilient in climate change. The focus on an environmentally friendly infrastructure may not only make Amberg more livable, but will also become a pioneering city in the area of ​​sustainability in the region.
