Vienna fights against violence: security measures for a carefree night

According to a survey by the Vienna Club Commission, 65 percent of those surveyed in Vienna's nightlife have already experienced discrimination or harassment. These alarming numbers were taken up by Marina Hanke, the chairman of the Vienna SPÖ women, that emphasizes that women and queer people in particular have to be able to celebrate carefree without being afraid of attacks.

Mayor Dr. Michael Ludwig has therefore initiated measures to improve security in public space. These concern, among other things, the introduction of alcohol and weapon ban zones as well as the increase in security staff at the Viennese lines. Vienna is increasingly focusing on the violence concept, especially in nightlife, where sexual violence is a great challenge.

The results show that structural changes and extended security concepts are necessary to create a safe environment.

As part of the amendment to the event law, organizers will in future have to present security and awareness concepts for events with over 300 visitors: inside.
