Why do you hold the Cannstatter Wasen? Beer tastes without!

The Cannstatters Wasen have recently opened their goals and followed up right behind the world -famous Munich Oktoberfest. This big folk festival lasts 17 days and attracts many guests who dress up in traditional costumes, especially in the dirndl and in the leather pants. But the question remains: is that really necessary to enjoy a few beer in the beer tent?

Tradition requires that you dress for the festival, but with many the understanding of this custom is left behind. Perhaps some of them think that the beer in the dirndl does not taste better or that it is not easier to get on the benches in leather pants. It is the discussion about tradition vs. pragmatism that gets loud here. Is there really a need to dress extra to enjoy the hustle and bustle?

Traditional fashion and their meaning

In a beer tent, which is often used for weddings or special occasions, traditional costume fashion does not really seem to be interwoven with the roots of the region. While you wear traditional clothing in a festive setting, you could also simply enjoy drinks in comfortable clothes. Most people would probably not dare to wear a dirndl or leather pants in everyday life. But at the Volksfest it suddenly looks 100 percent appropriate and even expected.

A peculiarity of people is also evident in the connection to their football club. When VfB plays against Bayern, the battle cry is inspired: "Pull out the leather pants!", Which illustrates the deeply rooted tradition and the community spirit. It is more than just a sporting rivalry - it is a celebration of culture and regional identity.

But in the end, how many do your costumes really wear outside of this festity? With golden weddings or baptisms, these clothing does not seem to be the standard. Instead, they offer a kind of uniform for a special opportunity. This clothing has a certain charm, but it hardly finds space in the everyday life of people.

So it can be considered amusing that you fulfill needs of a "club member" in order to celebrate the "cosiness" on the Wasen. This uniformity can even have a certain kind of joy, which inspires social dynamics. But is this custom really more than a collection of pretty outfits that no longer counts in view of the beer enjoyment?

It is also told by personal experiences where participants tried to try out these traditional costumes in their childhood. Some may have developed a kind of "leather allergy". This predisposition can cause laughter, but also illustrates that many of tradition see a kind of comedy and distraction.

This will continue to be shaped by the Cannstatter Wasen by traditional costume fashion. Whether it is really necessary or not - the decision to celebrate is to make for everyone. A sociable get -together should finally be the focus, regardless of the clothing.
