Stoves in crisis: How to save your old stove by 2025!
With the start of the new year 2025, stove owners face a crucial challenge: many old models have to be taken out of circulation due to stricter environmental protection regulations. From December 31, 2024, both fireplaces and tiled stoves that were put into operation before 2010 must be shut down because they no longer comply with the new, strict limits for fine dust and carbon monoxide. In Baden-Württemberg alone, it is estimated that around 200,000 old stoves are affected, and in individual regions, such as in the area of chimney sweep Simon Bachstädter, around 500 stoves are still affected SWR Current reported.
New rules from 2025
These measures are part of the Federal Immission Control Ordinance, which aims to drastically reduce emissions from fireplaces. Stricter limits apply to new ovens, while old models generally no longer meet the requirements. The values are set at a maximum of 0.15 grams of fine dust and 4 grams of carbon monoxide per cubic meter of exhaust gas. For many owners, this date comes as a surprise, despite the fact that the deadline has been known for years. Particularly when combustion is incomplete, increased fine dust levels arise, which pose a risk, especially in older ovens, explains Bachstädter again.
Fortunately, affected consumers have four options to deal with the situation. Some can completely shut down their old stove, while others have the option of retrofitting a fine dust filter or replacing the old stove with a new model that meets the applicable requirements. Mercury highlights that requests for exceptions may also be considered in certain cases. Particular attention should be paid to speaking with the chimney sweep to find the best solution for the individual situation.
The upcoming changes represent not only a challenge, but also an opportunity to replace older heating systems with more environmentally friendly alternatives. With the right planning and information, stove owners can successfully make the transition to a more environmentally friendly future.
