Anti-Semitic terror in Washington: dream couple wants to get engaged!

In Washington D.C. Yaron Lischinsky (28) and Sarah Lynn Milgrim (27), both employees of the Israeli embassy, were victims of a tragic attack last weekend. The couple had met for a carefree evening at the Capital Jewish Museum when a hooded man wearing a Palestinian scarf opened fire on them. Sarah died immediately, while Yaron, who wanted to betroth the couple in Jerusalem, is deeply grieving for his lost partner.

The attacker, Elias Rodriguez (30), was overpowered by security forces and shouted “Free Palestine” as he was arrested. Rodriguez is a member of the Communist Party and his attack is seen as another expression of increasing anti-Semitism worldwide. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the incident a "cruel anti-Semitic murder" and ordered increased security measures for Israeli missions worldwide.

International response and increased security precautions

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker said he was “deeply shocked” by the incident and reiterated his support for Israel. The Ministry of the Interior in Austria also stated that there is currently no concrete threat to the community, but that the security measures at Jewish institutions are being evaluated. In Germany there are also concerns about rising anti-Semitic violence. Anti-Semitism Commissioner Felix Klein reported over 2,600 crimes related to the Middle East conflict since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Many of these incidents occurred during anti-Israel demonstrations.

The situation in Germany is viewed critically, particularly due to the release of extremist ideologies via social media, which increases anti-Semitism. Current studies show an increase in anti-Semitic attitudes in society, with 7.2% of respondents believing that Jews are complicit in their persecutions, according to the Mitte 2023 study. Anti-Semitism manifests itself in different forms: classic, secondary and Israel-related anti-Semitism.

Anti-Semitism as a worldwide phenomenon

Increasing violence against the Jewish community is feared not only in the USA and Germany, but worldwide. Anti-Semitism is one of humanity's oldest resentments and is still fomented by various groups. Isolated incidents like the attack in Washington are part of a disturbing global trend fueled by radical propaganda and hatred of Israel. Israel's President Isaac Herzog emphasizes that the hatred that leads to such acts is tolerated in many places, including in Europe.

The events in Washington and the reactions to them highlight the need for increased measures to protect Jewish institutions and educate against anti-Semitism in schools. In Germany, 233 anti-Semitic incidents in schools have already caused great concern, and initiatives to raise awareness among teachers and students are being stepped up.

The attack makes it clear that anti-Semitism is not only a social but also a global concern. The incident in Washington requires a clear and decisive response from governments and societies worldwide.
