Increase in domestic violence: Every second man affected remains without protection!

Dresden (ots)

The sobering reality of domestic violence against men becomes shockingly clear in the latest report from the Federal Office for the Protection of Men from Violence (BFKM) on World Men's Day. Over 50 percent of the affected men who asked for help were turned away due to overcrowded men's shelters! These alarming statistics show that there is an urgent need for action: the support system for men is not only weak, but puts countless men in a desperate situation.

In 2023, 523 men were counted who turned to counseling centers. But the system turns out to be catastrophically understaffed - only 15 apartments with 49 places are available in only 5 of the 16 federal states. A comprehensive expansion is essential in order to meet the protection needs of the men affected. “It is bad, but not a shame, to be affected as a man,” emphasizes Frank Scheinert, managing director of the BFKM, and calls for more attention to this often ignored issue.

Criticism of the lack of offers of help

The BFKM warns that many men are still in danger of not being reached. If more than half of those seeking help are rejected, it is clear: something urgently needs to be done! The study data shows that psychological violence was reported in almost all cases, often in conjunction with other forms of violence. This clear data illustrates the need for protective spaces and options for retreat.

With initiatives such as “Living without violence, man”, the BFKM wants to raise public awareness and has already launched special campaigns to raise awareness of domestic violence against men. In a country where the topic is still taboo, every step towards education and support can make a big difference. The statistics collected are a step in the right direction, but without adequate resources, help remains an unattainable dream for many men.
