Focus on Vienna: Symposium illuminates cultural heritage 1900-2025
MAK, Wien, Österreich - on June 10th and 11th June 2025 is in (museum for applied art) a symposium under the title "The long history of Viennese modernity 1900 to the present". This significant cultural movement not only shaped the art history of Vienna, but also the development of European culture down to the present. Admission to this event is free, but prior registration on the MAK website is required.
The symposium offers renowned experts the opportunity to present their research results and deal with topics from music, literature, visual art, design and architecture. Particularly in focus are some of the iconic personalities of Viennese modernity, including Gustav Klimt, Arnold Schönberg, Adolf Loos and Karl Kraus, as well as less well -known positions. The aim is to understand Viennese modernity as a lively cultural heritage that also gives impulses for contemporary currents in the 21st century.

The program of the symposium is promising and rich in content:
- 10. June 2025 : Opening panel from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with Veronica Kaup-Hasler, Ralph Gleis, Lilli Hollein, Markus Schinwald, moderated by Oliver Rathkolb, followed by a reception in the Maklenhalle.
- 11. June 2025 : Symposium in the MAK lecture hall from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with lectures and discussions on various subject areas.
The program committee is made up of Lilli Hollein, Kathrin Pokorny-Nagel, Lydia Rathkolb and Oliver Rathkolb and works in cooperation with the Wiener Institut for Cultural and Contemporary History (Vicca) and the university Vienna, supported by the city of Vienna.

Viennese modernity is only part of the comprehensive cultural offerings that Vienna is planning for 2025. A number of significant exhibitions will take place in various museums in the city and illuminates artists from the Renaissance to modernity. Works by masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele are presented.

- Cézanne, Monet, Renoir: French Impressionism: September 25, 2025 - February 8, 2026, Lower Belvedere.
Masterpieces from the collection of Villa Langmatt, Switzerland, are shown. - Wotruba International: July 17, 2025 - January 11, 2026, Belvedere 21. This exhibition is devoted to Fritz Wotruba and addresses the international influence of its sculptures.
The Vienna Culture, which intensified from around 1890 to 1910, was characterized by developments in philosophy, literature, music, art, design and architecture. Significant personalities such as sigmund Freud , whose work "Die Dream interpretation" was published in 1900, and other thinkers of Viennese modernity have significantly influenced the city's social and creative climate. During this time, Vienna experienced an explosive cultural life that still works.
The symposium in the MAK and the numerous exhibitions in Vienna's museums underline the persistent importance of Viennese modernity and its influence on the current art and cultural landscape.
