Anniversary exhibition in the furniture museum: Discover Frank's masterpieces!

in the Vienna furniture museum, on April 9, 2025, the exhibition "Josef Frank and the others. New furniture 1920-1940" opens. On the occasion of three important anniversaries, the life and work of the famous architect Josef Frank is recognized. He posthumously celebrates his 140th birthday, while the 100th anniversary of the Viennese facility company "Haus & Garten" and the 30th anniversary of the death of ceramic Lucie Rie are committed. Frank, who died in Stockholm in 1967, is considered a key figure of the furniture Design that, with its unique aesthetics and philosophy, significantly influenced the design of Viennese modernity.

The exhibition not only shows the high -quality pieces of furniture from Frank, but also parallels and differences to the work of other designers of this era. In special replicas, furniture such as stools, loan chairs, boxes, tables and bed frames are presented in their original conditions. Photographs by Lucie Ries' artistic living space, designed by Ernst Plischke, complement the show. This apartment is also an important source of inspiration and is shown by several ceramics by Rie from the MAK.

Diversity of Viennese modernity

An additional highlight of the event is the presentation of important designers of Viennese modernity. Works by Otto Prutscher, Herbert Eichholzer and Heinrich Glaß show the design diversity of this time. Prutscher is known for his curved lines, while Eichholzer works with clear edges and dark brown tones. Glaß 'early work, which uses delicate green tones, remains relatively unknown in Austria, despite its artistic value.

A central theme of the exhibition is the story of "routes" that have taken the furniture through different countries and contexts. World maps present the paths of the designers during the National Socialism period when many Jewish architects had to flee from Austria. This return of many objects to Vienna illustrates the growing interest of the descendants in the history of furniture and their families.

meaning and relevance of the exhibition

The exhibits should not only illustrate the durability and quality of Frank's work, but also their international relevance; Many furniture found their way from Vienna to Alexandria and London. With this exhibition, the Möbelmuseum Vienna offers a deep insight into the design culture of the interwar period and illustrates the origins of contemporary Austrian design, which was strongly shaped after the end of the monarchy.

The show runs from April 9, 2025 to January 11, 2026 and is an opportunity to explore the stylistic evolution and the social dimension of the furniture design. For more information, visit Möbelmuseum Vienna or read what Kleine Zeitung reports on this fascinating exhibition.
