EU Prize for Citizens' Science: Romnja project enthusiastic!

On June 20, 2025, the winners of the European Prize for Citizens' Science (EU Prize for Citizen Science) were announced. This year, the Serbian project "Heroines", which received the main prize of 60,000 euros, is particularly emphasized. This innovative project aims to use the Bottom-Up research method of the living environments of the Romnja in Serbia Community Mappings To present and strengthen the voices of the Roma women. A group -based procedure is used to collect data about the challenges and potential of the community and present them visually.

The “Heroines” project has already delivered results in the form of a publication and a mobile exhibition. These results should sensitize decision -makers and the public and toast social changes. The importance of citizen participation in science was emphasized by Ekaterina Zaharieva, the commissioner for startups, research and innovation. She emphasized that these projects strengthen the trust between science and society.

More award winners

The “Antiquake Risk Hunter Community” project received the Digital Communities Award with 20,000 euros. The aim of this project is to prepare the population of the Istanbul residential area of ​​Kuzguncuk for possible earthquakes. Here, sources of danger and secure places of residents, schools, authorities and experts were documented, and the results were summarized in an interactive card for an emergency. This shows how important the active integration of the population is in disaster prevention.

The Diversity & Collaboration Award, also endowed with 20,000 euros, went to the project "Mofwatste - The Museum of Food Waste". In this project, more than 500 pupils, teachers and kitchen staff work together to document food waste in school canteens in the Portuguese cities and Viana do Castelo. Six tons of food waste were found in the observation period, and the participants developed strategies to sustainably reduce this problem.

Award ceremony and further information

The award ceremony will take place in Linz in September during the Ars Electronica Festival. The winners will be presented in Linz in the week from September 3 to September 7, with the official award ceremony on September 4th in the Design Center. A total of 409 projects from 58 countries were submitted for this third edition of the competition, with three main prizes and 27 honorary races being awarded.

The European Prize for Citizenship is implemented as part of the impetus project, in which institutions such as King’s College London, the European Science Engagement Association and other organizations are involved. The independent jury, consisting of five experts, has selected the winners due to the broad citizen participation in scientific research, which increasingly focuses on local topics.
