AI predicts: Spain will win the 2025 Women's European Championship!
The women's European Football Championship in Switzerland is eagerly awaited on July 1, 2025. A research team, including from the University of Innsbruck, has already simulated the upcoming European Championships 100,000 times on the computer. These simulations show that the Spanish national team enters the tournament as the clear favorite, with a win probability of 27.2%. Other strong contenders for the title are Germany (23%), France (17.6%) and England (17.2%). All other teams are significantly behind these four teams, report laola1.at.
The underlying model is based on a hybrid machine learning methodology that combines statistical models with betting odds. Achim Zeileis from the Institute of Statistics at the University of Innsbruck points out that the actual outcome of the European Championship may differ from the forecasts. Interestingly, the same model predicted England to be European champions at Euro 2022.
Favorites and underdogs
In addition to the University of Innsbruck's predictions, Opta's supercomputer ran more than 10,000 simulations to assess the participants' chances of success. This results in a slightly different picture. Here too, Spain is named favorite with 24.8%, followed by England (16.1%), France (15.3%) and Germany (14.8%). Compared to these four teams, the other teams' chances of being outsiders are relatively low.
- Schweden: 6,0 %
- Niederlande: 5,4 %
- Dänemark: 3,6 %
- Italien: 3,2 %
- Norwegen: 3,2 %
- Island: 2,1 %
- Schweiz: 2,0 %
- Portugal: 1,4 %
- Belgien: 0,9 %
- Finnland: 0,8 %
- Polen: 0,2 %
- Wales: 0,1 %
Spain enjoys a lead of over eight percentage points over England. In addition, the chances of reaching the quarter-finals are promising for the favorites. According to the calculations, the following teams already have an 87.7% chance of reaching the quarter-finals: Spain (87.7%), England (73%), France (71.6%) and Germany (77.3%). Norway can also expect a probability of 63.7%, despite a weaker overall rating.
The role of Austria
The Austrian women's team will take on a spectator role in this tournament, without the highest chances of winning. Compared to the favorite teams, they will hardly be mentioned in the simulated scenarios.
