Tens of thousands of Austrians miss climate monus - money remains!
In Austria, tens of thousands of people did not receive the climate bonus in at least one of the three years from 2022 to 2024. This is particularly alarming, since the payment heights were between 500 euros for 2022 and up to 290 euros for 2024. The last payment ended at the end of March 2025, but numerous letters to people without well -known account details were sent, which continued the situation. According to 5min.at there are currently 146,370 open claims for the first climate bonus and 165,276 people are still entitled to be entitled to the climate monus 2023.
The climate bonus was introduced to compensate for the additional costs by the CO2 prize, which has been in force since 2022. This was done to reward climate -friendly behavior and to meet the citizens financially. The bonus system was staggered regionally by 2023, which was paid out, depending on the place of residence. The amount of the climate bonus for 2024 was divided into four categories: of 145 euros for the base amount up to 290 euros for the highest category, which contained additional regional compensation.
exclusion and claims
The right to the climate monus was for people who were registered with main residence in Austria at least 183 days a year, with specific regulations for children and for people in custody. Minors received 250 euros each, while for the years 2023 and 2024 the right to claim was only for more than 183 days in custody.
However, there are many open demands, especially because some people do not pick up their letters or have been moved before delivery. Claims can be made up to five years after the end of the calendar year (2022 to the end of 2027), while a period of three years applies to 2023 and 2024. In view of these deadlines, it remains unclear how many people will ultimately sit on their money they are entitled to.abolition of the climate monus
The new federal government has abolished the climate monus for 2025. This measure was implemented for cost reasons, since the high expenditure of the climate monus could not be covered by increasing the CO2 tax. This was confirmed in oesterreich.gv.at . For the 2024 climate bonus, the payment started in autumn 2024, but the negative effects of this decision among the people concerned still seem to be serious.
In view of these developments, it remains to be seen how the beneficiaries react to the outstanding claims and whether they can assert their rights before the deadlines run. A service hotline is available for questions that can provide support for the entitlement.Details | |
