Selenskyj in Vienna: Austria relies on strong Ukraine reversing!
Wien, Österreich - On June 16, 2025, Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj and several government members Vienna visited. The aim of the visit was to consolidate bilateral relationships between Austria and Ukraine. As part of this initiative, a declaration of intent to deepen the economic cooperation was signed by the Austrian federal government. The Industrial Association (IV) and the Austria Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ) welcome these steps, which aimed at a specific implementation of joint projects in the areas of reconstruction, energy supply and technological development.
The Austrian industry is said to play a major role in the reconstruction of Ukraine. The trade volume between the two countries amounts to around 1.5 billion euros, with Austria being the sixth most important investor in Ukraine before the war. The entire reconstruction volume after the war is estimated at over 500 billion euros, which illustrates the dimension of this challenge.
reconstruction projects and strategies
The Ukrainian government's reconstruction plan comprises 850 projects that are to be realized over a period of 10 years. In this context, principles such as "Build Back Better", immediate measures and gradual acceleration are to be pursued in order to promote EU integration and to mobilize private investments. Current reconstruction activities include repairs and the reconstruction of houses as well as the restoration of health and energy supply systems and infrastructure projects.
international support plays a crucial role in this. Ukraine has had the status of an EU accession candidate since June 2022, which means that the EU contributes with various financing instruments to support the reconstruction, among other things with Ukraine facility, which provides up to 50 billion euros for the period 2024-2027.
Austrian companies and their role
Austrian companies bring their expertise into central areas such as machine and plant engineering, infrastructure, energy and technology. Around 1,000 companies work in Ukraine, 200 of which operate on site. Infrastructure projects and private investments are crucial to promote reconstruction. The OEKB offers support for shops in Ukraine, especially in the public sector, and the foreign trade center in Kiev helps with business initiation and finding a partner.
ECOAUSTRIA has also pointed out that Austrians have specific strengths in sectors such as construction industry, IT services and sustainable energy that are indispensable for reconstruction. The path of Ukraine to a modern and reformed economy requires extensive reforms that Austria can also influence.
However, the challenges in reconstruction are considerable. Uncertainties in the geopolitical environment as well as questions about the rule of law and the fight against corruption are risks. In order to successfully participate in the reconstruction, Austria's companies and political actors should work together in a coordinated manner and take initiative to promote their strengthening as a partner in reconstruction.
Overall, the reconstruction process calls for a long -term commitment on several levels in order to take into account both geopolitical as well as the economic and social dimensions of this project.
