Salzburg's municipalities in the Finanz-Engpass: Manfred Sampl demands solutions!

The municipalities in Salzburg face a financial challenges and have to deal with rising costs and increased tasks. In the current situation, municipal association president Manfred Sampl (ÖVP), Mayor of St. Michael im Lungau, sees the need for a mandatory kindergarten visit for four -year -old, but only with secure financial resources. "We are happy to do our homework, but we definitely don't want to be left alone when financing," emphasizes Sampl. At the moment, the municipalities already bear around 50 percent of the costs for childcare and many are faced with financial bottlenecks. For 2024, 13 out of 119 municipalities have applied for support from the state of Salzburg, which makes the increasing burden clear, as also reported.

In recent years, the financial situation of the Salzburg communities has been stable, but increasing investments in the infrastructure and other expenses require more resources. Governor Deputy Stefan Schnöll informs that the country has put together a new financing package of 20.5 million euros in order to help the communities. This includes funds from the municipal equalization fund, which, however, has lost considerable reserves. The municipalities are crucial for economic development, according to Schnöll, who also demands the need for another community package of the federal government so that the municipalities can remain financially capable of action. Manfred Sampl also highlights the option for cooperation and savings in order to secure the quality of life of the citizens in the long term without having to be trembled from year to year.

strategies for the future

A central component of the Sampl action plan is a three-point program that establishes clear distribution of tasks between the federal, state and the municipalities. A current advisory project in five selected communities is intended to promote cooperation and efficiency. Mayor Andreas Kaiser from Mariapfarr explains that the communities have to analyze where savings are possible and how to work cheaper together. This is particularly important because increasing personnel and energy costs as well as stagnating income significantly restrict the financial scope of the municipalities, as also reports
