Racism in Austria: Volkshilfe calls for comprehensive strategy against discrimination!

In the middle of the discussions about the international day against racism, Erich Fenninger, director of Volkshilfe Austria, calls for a determined commitment of the federal government against racism. In the political program, the term racism only occurs twice - in the chapters "Sport" and "Austria in the world", which according to Fenninger is not sufficient to meet the current challenges. "It is extremely unfortunate that some measures lead to the exclusion of certain groups and are discriminatory, especially in the area of asylum and migration," criticized Fenninger in a statement. In particular, he sees the suspension of family reunification as a serious problem, since this measure is in question of human rights in order to meet right -wing populist election promises.

urgent need for action

In view of the recently published racism report in 2024, Zara, which analyzes racist attacks and structures in Austria, Fenninger demands a comprehensive strategy to combat racism. "We urgently need a national action plan against right-wing extremism and determined measures against anti-Semitism," explains the Volkshilfe director. In addition, the negative consequences of waiting periods were pointed out, which make the integration and participation of refugees considerably more difficult.

Fenninger discussed with the anti-discrimination expert Esther-Maria Kürmayr in a Podcast of Volkshilfe about strategies for combating racism in Austria. They illuminated structural racism and the unequal treatment of people with other citizenship. In her opinion, it is important to address and combat social discrimination in the form of workshops and public discussions in order to create a fairer and inclusive society. This exciting debate shows that the need for action in the population and politics is immense in order to effectively counter racism, as reported.

Volkshilfe expects politics that it not only acts against discrimination, but also presents solutions transparently and manual to actively reduce racism. The demand for a clear strategy for combating any kind of discrimination is becoming increasingly louder, and responsibility now lies with decision -makers to act quickly and effectively.
