New face for Austria in the EU committee of the regions!

On December 3, 2024, the main committee of the National Council has accepted decisive reports on the future representation of Austria in the European Committee of the Regions (ADR) and the planned missions of the Federal Army. The Federal Government decided in September the nominations for the 2025-2030 term, as Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer confirmed today. A total of twelve members and twelve replacement members were proposed, including prominent governors such as Hans Peter Doskozil from Burgenland and Peter Kaiser from Carinthia. These nominations are an important basis for the future political participation of Austria within the EU, since the ADR represents the interests of the regions and cities at European level, which cor.europa.eu

Bundesheer in international commitment

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner informed the main committee of the Federal Army foreign missions in 2025 as part of reporting. A total of 33 exercises and training measures are planned to extend to different regions, including Sri Lanka, Hungary, Canada and Germany. This includes participation in international organizations such as OSCE and NATO. The main goals of these operations are peace insurance and humanitarian aid. In 2023, 20 exercises and eight training measures were carried out abroad, in which 729 members of the defense department were sent. The costs of these missions amounted to around 3.56 million euros, which illustrates the significant financial dimension of such international engagements.

Another report on the posting of basic military service providers abroad was also presented. In 2025, basic military service for exercises in Germany and training measures in Slovakia and the Czech Republic are also planned. Defense Minister Tanner made it clear that a complete separation of the Austrian troops of Ukrainian units in Germany was guaranteed, which contributes to ensuring neutrality and international knowledge transfer. In this context, the international exchange of experiences is emphasized as an important part of the training.
