Long -term consequences of Covid: Experts demand more research and support
Five years after the beginning of the Corona pandemic, the health effects of the SARS-COV-2 virus remain clearly noticeable. While severe acute courses for the majority of the population are no longer in focus, many people suffer from long -term consequences, even after mild courses. These long-term consequences, such as heart attacks, thrombosis and chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), are a major challenge for those affected. The co-leaders of the newly founded National Reference Center for Post Viral Syndromes at the MedUni Vienna, Kathryn Hoffmann and Eva Untersmayr-Elsenhuber emphasize that more intensive research and improvement in treatment structures Urgently necessary to be able to help these patients better, such as 5min.at reports .
New reference center for post viral syndrome
In order to optimize the care and research in the field of post -viral diseases, including Long Covid and ME/CFS, a national reference center at the MedUni Vienna was established by the Austrian Federal Government. The center receives around one million euros to advance the necessary research and train skilled workers. Minister of Health Johannes Rauch praised the decision because the MedUni Vienna already has extensive experience in this area, such as medi.
The reference center will not only promote medical research, but also offer interdisciplinary training so that health specialists can react better to the complex clinical pictures of post-covid syndromes. This is particularly important because in Austria there are up to 80,000 people affected by ME/CFS, and due to the lack of clear biomarkers, the diagnosis process is often lengthy. The establishment of the center is an essential step to sustainably improve medical care and to raise awareness of post -viral diseases.
