Big fire in Poggersdorf! Stable completely destroyed, no injuries!
In the early Monday evening, March 25, 2025, a devastating fire broke out in a stable in Poggersdorf. The local fire brigades were alerted around 6 p.m., when concerned residents could already see large swaths of smoke from afar. When the fire brigade arrived, an outbuilding had come into full fire. Immediate operational measures were initiated to combat the fire under heavy respiratory protection.
The fire brigades used from Poggersdorf, Grafenstein, Völkermarkt, Timenitz, Pischeldorf and St. Thomas mobilized around 150 helpers who worked tirelessly to control the fire. The emergency services succeeded until around 6:45 p.m., but the reversal work went into the night because the fire could not be completely deleted. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the stable building was completely destroyed by the fire. It is currently being determined to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Problem of the stable fires
Fire statistics in the field of agriculture shows that stable fires are a widespread problem. In June 2021, the Federal Council asked the Federal Government to examine an upper limit for animal husbandry and to create comprehensive statistics on interference and fire cases, which are often associated with high animal losses. According to the fire protection expert Wang, fire fighting can be significantly more difficult due to the presence of animals. When they panic, some try to flee while others are put on by the fire.
The difficult situation continues to be complicated by the often inadequate number of farmers who can quickly help the animals in an emergency. In the first half of 2021, Stefan Stein and his team recorded 1,013 fires and accident in stables, with around 59,300 animals died during this period. These alarming numbers illustrate how important it is to collect precise data in order to better understand and manage the dangers in connection with stable fires.
Without concrete statistics, however, the scope of the situation remains unclear, which makes effective prevention difficult.
