Family reunification stopped: FPÖ warns of danger from naturalization!
The debate about family reunification in Austria has reignited again crown reported. The Freedom Party under FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl is concerned about the measures planned by the new federal government, which do not go far enough for them. Around 15,000 refugees who found refuge in Austria in 2015 have the opportunity to apply for citizenship this year. At the next meeting of the Council of Ministers, a decision will probably be made to temporarily suspend the influx of refugees. The ÖVP argues that family reunification has reached a level that is overburdening the country. Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler from the SPÖ makes it clear that there is currently no family reunification from crisis countries such as Syria and Afghanistan.
In the past, the FPÖ had even called for closing access to citizenship for refugees who came to the country through the asylum process. The aim was to extend the existing ten-year period to 15 years in order to control the “mass rush” of 2015. However, these considerations were discontinued in the wake of the failed coalition talks. However, the current legal provisions could soon come under scrutiny. The Ministry of the Interior makes it clear that each application is examined individually and requirements such as no criminal offenses and proven language skills in German are required.
Naturalization in Germany
Another relevant development concerns the new citizenship law in Germany, which has been in force since June 27, 2024. Applicants for naturalization must meet various requirements, as can be found on the City of Frankfurt website ( frankfurt.de ) is explained. These include, among other things, a permanent right of residence and sufficient knowledge of German. In general, applicants must also provide proof of their knowledge of the legal and social order.
For special life situations, such as marriages to German citizens or specific integration services, the required stay times can be shortened. The naturalization process also requires the submission of extensive documents, including evidence of language skills and integration into society. The naturalization fee for adults is 255 euros.
