Honda and Nissan: Fusion talks for the third largest car manufacturer!
In a groundbreaking step in the global automotive sector, the Japanese carmakers Honda and Nissan have started official discussions about a merger. This ambitious project, which was announced this week, could lead to the establishment of a holding company that is to be acted as a parent company for both companies and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The merger would make Honda and Nissan, who are currently taking second and third place among the Japanese automobile manufacturers, the third largest automobile manufacturer in the world. Honda boss Toshihiro Mibe emphasized that the merger aims to bundle information and resources in order to create great advantages and synergies and at the same time maintain identity of both brands, reported Pfalz-Express .
The talks that are to be completed by June 2025 are particularly important in the context of global competition in the field of electric vehicles, where both corporations have recently fallen behind. Nissan boss Makoto Uchida said that companies will check the creation of considerable synergies between Honda, Nissan and the Mitsubishi Motors, which is also involved. Mitsubishi, who has been a strategic partner of Nissan for some time, is considering participation in the merger and will make a decision by the end of January 2025, reported Manager Magazin .
The cooperation between Nissan and Honda was announced in March 2024 regarding the development of electric vehicles and software technologies in order to reduce costs and improve competitiveness. This merger could therefore not only be a strategic answer to the saturated market for electric cars, but also a way to regain innovative strength and earlier market shares.
