Star singers bring joy and blessings to Gerolstein!
As part of a festive tradition, the star singers will be traveling in the Vulkaneifel on January 5, 2025. In Gerolstein, the star singers were welcomed in the town hall by city mayor Stefanie Lorisch and VG mayor Hans Peter Böffgen. The children, dressed as the Three Wise Men, delivered their message with a blessing and song recitals.
The performances were accompanied by Annette Schlüter, a community speaker, and Sonja Schneider. Lorisch thanked the star singers for their visit and praised the children's commitment. She also said that the city of Gerolstein could really use the blessing. The star singers in costume include Felix Reck, Emil Reinarz, Lucia Nägel, Elias Ngel, Vera Luja and Karma Tataru.
Tradition and purpose of star singing
The star singers will parade through the community until January 6th, raising money for charities to support children in need. The tradition of star singing is maintained by children who go from house to house dressed as the Three Wise Men. How on christmas.org reports, they distribute blessings and collect donations for development projects worldwide, especially for disadvantaged children in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.
The tradition embodies the wise men from the East who found the baby Jesus. Originally introduced by the Catholic Church, star singing combines the fun of the Christmas season with helping those in need. In many regions, star singing begins after Christmas and lasts until the end of January. In addition, the star singers often leave chalk marks over the doors that represent a blessing and show the year.
Star singing is different because of the participation of children and the focus on charity and compassion in a materialistic time. It is an act of community, education and empathy.
