Government chaos in Austria: Another meeting with Van der Bellen!
After a dramatic failure of the coalition negotiations between FPÖ and ÖVP on Wednesday, February 13, 2025, Austria is facing a political turning point. FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl traced the government mandate, which heralded the first talks between Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and the party leader in the Hofburg for Thursday. The Neos boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger starts at 11 a.m., followed by Greens boss Werner Kogler, ÖVP boss Christian Stocker and SPÖ boss Andreas Babler. According to reports from krone.at, Herbert Kickl will also intervene at the next round if required.
Four possible options for the future
In a statement, van der Bellen outlined four possible ways on Wednesday evening: new elections, a minority government with parliamentary toleration, an expert government or the formation of a new coalition. The president will exchange ideas with all parties after the talks between black and red pink failed in January. This represents a new challenge for the stability of the government, since the SPÖ and ÖVP also strive for a narrow majority in the National Council, as Meinzirk.at reports.
The political situation remains tense because internal cross -party discussions are required. While the SPÖ is coming together for a presidium meeting in parliament on Thursday, the ÖVP had already convened a federal party executive. In the political arena, another attempt by FPÖ and ÖVP, possibly with NEOS, could be due, whereby the negotiations on possible government coalitions remain in the suspension
