Government formation: ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS on the way to the triple coalition!

Hofburg, Wien, Österreich - The political developments in Austria overturn! ÖVP and SPÖ conducted intensive negotiations on Thursday evening and seem to have become apparent to launch a historic triple coalition with the NEOS. As örf.at , the People's Party and Social Democracy are in contact with Neos, to secure a stable majority for the coming five years. "It has to be about content and not about who takes over which ministry," explained Manuela Khom, the Styrian boss of the ÖVP. Florian Seiter, the state manager of the SPÖ, also expressed a positive statement about the developments.

Surprising turn in government formation

After almost five months full of political tumbling, which made it difficult to design a new government, the maps in politics are changing. According to Kleine Zeitung are the guides of the three parties-Christian Stocker from the ÖVP, Andreas Baler from the SPÖ and Beate Meinl-Reisinger from NEOS- ready to strive for the blessing of Federal President Alexander van der Bellen. However, official government formation could only take place in the course of March, since the NEOS still have to question their basis, which requires a week of lead time.

The negotiations for a possible triple coalition are on an intensive course, especially since you can see that a pure black and red coalition without a majority mandate is not viable. Neos are ready to enter the government with one or two ministries, including probably education and a department such as justice or foreign policy. This turning point is particularly remarkable because the NEOS had previously moved away from the negotiating tables and could suddenly return as a potential partner. The conversations are hot, but the official confirmation is still pending - the tension is tangible!
