Legal pressure in Romania: Church representatives warn of dangerous development!
In Romania it is bubbling: anti -Semitism and right -wing extremism have increased in society. The Romanian Orthodox theologian and pastor Ioan Moga warned in a statement of the dangerous currents within the not only political but also social discourses. The results of the first round of the presidential elections on November 24th and the recently taken parliamentary elections on December 1st show that Romanian society drifts more to the right, says Moga. These developments are part of a larger trend in Europe, in which right -wing extremist parties and their religiously colored discourses in the political landscape gain influence. According to Moga, the Orthodox Church, according to Moga, must be vigilant, because it must not be instrumentalized in order to support anti -Semitic or ultranationalist ideologies that are contrary to the values of orthodoxy. This discourse "harms the Christian testimony more than it benefits".
Politics oracle before the runoff election
In the meantime, the constitutional court of Romania confirmed the controversial results of the presidential elections. The right -wing populist candidate Călin Georgescu surprisingly won the first round, which led to numerous contestations. On December 2, the court decided that the elections were valid, despite the contestation by the EU MP Cristian Terheș, who demanded the cancellation of the results. The runoff election on December 8th between Georgescu and the pro-European candidate Elena Lasconi is determined. These elections are not only a political challenge, but also an examination for the Romanian society that has to decide between national and European identities. On the sidelines of the elections, another explosive topic is shown: While the social democratic PSD advocates European cooperation and values, ultranationalist forces try to gain the ground. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu rejected demands for withdrawal after the election defeat and emphasized that the PSD wanted to act as a "bridge" between European development and traditional values. In view of the increasing support for right -wing extremist positions, it is more important than ever that the churches and religious communities draw clear limits and work for tolerance and dialogue. Moga decisively stated: "Anti -Semitism is incompatible with orthodoxy" and a decisive step towards more education is necessary to counteract the challenges of today.
