Nehammer steps back: Political chaos in Austria after failed coalition talks!

Österreich - Austria is on the abyss! Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced his upcoming cancellation announcement today after the talks on the formation of a new government ended in a dramatic fiasco. The negotiations between the largest center parties in the country who wanted to exclude the right-wing extremist Freedom Party (FPO) have failed!

on Saturday, just one day after the withdrawal of the liberal Neos from the conversations with Nehammer's conservative Volkspartei (ÖVP) and the Social Democrats (SPÖ), the Chancellor said: "After the coalition talks have been terminated, I will step down both as a chancellor and as the party chairman of the folk party in the coming days." The political landscape in Austria is thus in a state of complete uncertainty!

a setback for the center-left alliance

In an emotional video on his social media, Nehammer emphasized that the “long and honest” negotiations with the center-left alliance failed, although there was a common interest in combating the strengthening right-wing extremism. "We will not support measures that damage the economy or introduce new taxes," he added, criticizing the "radicals" that only describe problems but do not offer solutions.

The Freedom Party (FPO) won a historical victory in the last elections at the end of September with almost 30 percent of the votes. But other parties refused to coalize with the Eurosceptic and Russia-friendly FPO under the leadership of Herbert Kickl. President Alexander Van der Bellen had given Nehammer to form a coalition at the end of October, but these efforts were also unsuccessful.

Nehammer now faces the challenge of enabling an orderly transition while the ÖVP will gather to discuss possible successors. The Neos boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger said that progress was impossible and that "basic reforms" could not be agreed. The political uncertainty in Austria could now lead to the appointment of a new leader and a transitional government by the President

The next government will have to face an enormous challenge: According to the European Commission, Austria must save between 18 and 24 billion euros! The country's economy has been in a recession for two years, unemployment is increasing and the budget is 3.7 percent of gross domestic product above the limit of 3 percent.

Austria, a country in political chaos - the future remains uncertain!
