Women in the global south: strong voices for climate justice!

Wien, Österreich - Vienna, March 13, 2025-The Catholic Women's Movement in Austria (KFBÖ) organized a large benefit soup dinner in the town hall to draw attention to the urgent issues and support women in the global south. Angelika Ritter-Greplep, the chairwoman of the KFBÖ, emphasized: "Women of the global south are particularly affected by climate change and at the same time the most important players for more air conditioning." Together with Mayor Michael Ludwig, she found that Vienna would like to actively campaign for these important concerns that have both local and international dimensions.

Mayor Ludwig emphasized that women, both in the countries of the global south and Austria, play a central role in society. This year's Family Fast Day campaign, the motto of which is "Share Future", aims to create awareness of solidarity and social responsibility by fasting and giving up. The donations collected benefit from the over 70 aid projects of the KFBÖ, the focus is particularly on the partnership with the Colombian organization Sercoldes, which is committed to women's rights and climate justice.

The soup meal, which was prepared and served by students from the tourism school module, not only symbolizes pleasure, but also solidarity and awareness of the needs of helpful women. Prof. Helga Kromp-Kolb, Kathrin Gaál and numerous other high-ranking guests were present to underline the importance of the topics. The popular benefit event serves as a platform to strengthen the votes and rights of women in the global south that live in many countries under difficult conditions. The support for the programs ranges from education to economic independence to active commitment to peace and environmental protection. According to the Global Witness Report, at least 79 environmental activists in Colombia were murdered in Colombia, which underlines the urgency of such projects that support women in their role as guardians of the environment.

This initiative is underpinned by the conviction of the KFBÖ that the destruction of the rainforest and the threat to the indigenous population have extensive global effects. According to welt-der-frauen.at , the creation of climate-conscious and gender societies is a central concern. Benefic dinner is not only an act of giving, but also a strong sign of a common commitment to social justice and environmental protection.
