Eu in sight: Romania experiences choice chaos and political manipulation!
In Romania, alarming developments are shown before the upcoming repetition of the election. A few weeks before the decisive urn gang, the promising presidential candidate Calin Georgescu was arrested under extremely questionable circumstances. This procedure raises serious questions about democracy in the EU. Harald Vilimsky, the freedom of delegation in the European Parliament, sharply criticized the fact that unpleasant political forces are systematically switched off and described the EU’s interventions in national elections as threatening to democratic structures in Europe. "If candidates who do not fit into the EU world view are simply locked away, then it has nothing to do with democracy," quotes apa.at Vilimsky.
In addition to the arrest of Georgescus, it was recently known that a coalition alliance of pro-European parties should be formed in Romania. President Klaus Iohannis commissioned the Social Democrats and previous Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu to form a new government. This coalition, which is the strongest party after the parliamentary election, consists of the Social Democrats (PSD), the bourgeois PNL and the Hungarian UDMR. ZDF reported that the new government pursued the goal of "defending the democratic values", while at the same time confronting it with the strong extreme right forces in Romania. It remains to be seen how the political landscape and possible allegations of manipulation will affect the upcoming elections, especially in view of the Russian influence, which led to the cancellation of the last presidential election.
The situation remains tense because the Romanian constitutional court canceled the presidential election and has to determine a new appointment promptly that the new government will determine. It all indicates that the coming weeks are decisive for how the democratic rules of the game are interpreted in Romania and whether the citizens are actually able to give their voice without external influence, as the freedom.
