Wiener Netze relies on the future: 300-ton transformer for stable power grid!

On February 17, 2025, the fourth of a total of five transformers in the Simmering substation in Vienna was delivered. This 300 -ton transformer, with a nominal output of 300 megawatts (MW), plays a crucial role in the city's future energy supply. "It is impressive how many companies are involved in the creation of new infrastructure," said Peter Hanke, the city council for finance, business and Wiener Stadtwerke. The Viennese networks are investing around 150 million euros in this new substation, in order to continue to ensure the high level of security of 99.99 % in Vienna, as already from wien.gv.at reported.

Overall, the new system in the substation will offer the possibility of efficiently transporting renewable energies to the city, which is of great importance for the planned energy transition. With the delivery of the fourth transformer, we approach the completion, which is planned for 2026. While a continuous expansion of the energy network will take place in the next ten years, with investments of 3 billion euros to ensure energy supply in Vienna, a hydrogen generation plant is also being built on the site in order to make the future of energy supply sustainable, such as has highlighted.

The important project is part of a comprehensive plan that also includes the construction of eight new substances and 200 km additional high and maximum voltage lines by 2033. The digitization of the power grid through intelligent transformations and smart meters is also on the agenda to ensure security of supply in an increasingly complex energy environment. "We will definitely not be boring in the coming years," emphasizes the management of the Wiener Netze.
