Wiener Naschmarkt is changing: new stands and green oasis planned!
Naschmarkt, Wien, Österreich - On April 4, 2025, City Councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ) presented the stander team for the newly designed market room at the Naschmarkt in Vienna. This measure is part of an extensive redesign project that not only includes the market stalls, but also the creation of the "Naschpark", which is supposed to represent a climate -friendly oasis in the city.
Martin Jank from Vienna Water Management gave an insight into the current construction progress at the presentation event. The shell of the basement, the staircase and the floor slab for the market room, which is around 850 square meters and will offer a walk -in roof garden, has already been completed. The building construction will continue in the coming months, but no specific completion date was mentioned; However, experts expect a completion in autumn 2025.
scope of the project
The entire redesign project comprises an area of 12,000 square meters in the former parking lot between the Vienna lines. The "Naschpark" will create a green oasis that should play a crucial role in the cooling effect in the city. The project will be developed according to the objectives of the urban development plan (Step) 2025, which is intended to strategically manage Vienna's urban development by 2025. The step looks at all facets of urban development and is supported by citizen participation and innovative approaches to promote a socially just and ecological environment.
The popular flea market on the Naschmarkt should also be preserved, but is redesigned in a later phase. There were an overwhelming number of around 200 applications for the 13 stands in the new market room, whereby sustainability and the use of organic products represent selective criteria in the selection. Among the planned stands are a organic meat shop, a chocolate factory and several providers of fresh fish and delicacies.
Park and trees
In parallel to the construction of the market room, intensive work is carried out at the Naschpark, which is 1,200 square meters in size and is planted with around 90 new trees. Citizens have brought their wishes into the planning process that demand a green and water -friendly environment. Both the park and the market room should be completed by autumn 2025. The farmers' market on the Naschmarkt remains open during the construction work. The construction work begins in October 2024 and have some challenges, especially due to the proximity to the Vienna River Vault and subway. There is a special challenge in the testing of the tree locations, since large trees can only be planted on the edge, while a total of 18 large crown XXL trees are transplanted.
Overall, the projects on the Naschmarkt aim to create a living space for local and regional products and sustainable urban development, which is realized by the architecture firm Mostlikely and DND landscape planning that won the corresponding competition in autumn 2023
