Vienna is determined against nuclear power: students get to know risks!

Seibersdorf, Österreich - On March 11, 2025, Fukushima's disaster was for the 14th time, which Vienna's environmental city councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky describes as a warning example of the dangers of nuclear energy. The city of Vienna clearly speaks against the extension of licenses for old nuclear power plants and the construction of new facilities in Europe. Czernohorszky emphasizes the risks of this technology, especially in the context of the Ukraine War, which illustrates the susceptibility of nuclear power plants by attacks such as the facilities in Saporischschja and Chernobyl. Reasons enough to clarify more younger people about this topic, which is done by the first Viennese anti-nuclear excursion, in which pupils attended the nuclear engineering Seibersdorf (NES), where radioactive waste is treated, such as wien.gv.at reported.

As part of this excursion, the students not only learn how high the energy expenditure for the disposal of radioactive material is, but also that comparatively few such waste is in Austria. An accompanying workshop of the Vienna Environmental Service offers additional information on the subject of atomic energy in order to raise awareness of cross -generational effects. Czernohorszky expects Europe to reduce its dependence on nuclear and fossil energy through better energy efficiency and the expansion of renewable energies. "It is high time that we rely on renewable energies and call for more security in Europe," explains Czernohorszky, which is also chairman of the CNFE network (Cities for a Nuclear Free Europe), which is committed to a future without nuclear power.

focus on education and integration

Jürgen Czernohorszky, recently also responsible for education and integration, is planning to review problematic kindergartens and wants to give schools more freedom in decisions. He sees education as the key to successful integration and urges you to make the transitions from kindergarten to school flowering. "The kindergarten is a central educational site," says Czernohorszky. In a first record of his term, which began after the Vienna election in 2015, he has already attended 75 schools. Now he would like to pay more attention to potential radicalization tendencies and support fraud in the facilities. In his opinion, 95 percent of Viennese kindergartens do an excellent job, but "you shouldn't overlook the rest". According to Czernohorszky, this challenge must be better controlled to ensure quality and security, such as reports the press .
