Traffic chaos on the burner highway: new measures for discharge!

Gries am Brenner, Österreich - The burner highway is currently facing a huge challenge: the construction of the over 1,800 meter long Lueg Bridge has massively influenced the traffic routing in this section. Basically, traffic is only possible in a single lane, which led to sometimes long delays, especially in January and February. Nevertheless, a first record of ASFinag shows that the traffic jams could be notified noticeably at least on weekends through targeted adjustments and at times two -lane traffic tours. "During the week, the single-lanage only caused a little longer at short notice, in the rest of the time it worked very well," said Asfinag Managing Director Stefan Siegele and spoke of a consistently positive summary.

In order to minimize the effects of construction work on traffic, ASFINAG, together with security authorities, has developed a comprehensive package of measures. From January 1, 2025, driving bans come into force for certain routes of the low -ranking road network. These concern the low mountain ranges and various municipal roads in the Wipptal and greater Innsbruck area. The aim is to lead the passage to the highway as best as possible and reduce the strain on the surrounding roads. In addition, new automatic dosing lights are installed in the area of Brennerstraße to optimize the flow of traffic and avoid stacking delays.

optimization of public transport

Another key aspect to deal with the traffic problem is the expansion of the public transport system. From December 2023, the offer in the Wipptal will be improved by extended train connections. In particular, five new connections are set up between Steinach and Brenner, which creates a half -hour rhythm. The bus connections are also expanded to ensure an early connection to the trains. The first buses to connect to the trains that arrive in Innsbruck are already starting in the morning.

In the summer months, the Lueg Bridge will be accessible almost daily in two lanes, which should mean a significant relief for travelers. These measures are crucial to optimize travel traffic over the burner during the construction phase and at the same time ensure the safety of all road users, as ASFINAG reports. For more information, the ASFINAG measures are available online to facilitate planning for all trips via this important traffic artery.
