Students: Inside the BG/BRG Lienz donations for Syrian refugees!

Before the Easter holidays, students were involved: interior, teachers and employees of the BG/BRG Lienz in a fundraising campaign, the so -called fasting soup campaign. A small contribution vegetable soup, homemade bread and cake were offered. The proceeds of this campaign, which took place in the last week of school before the holidays, goes to Syria. A total of around 2,000 euros were collected, which the school community was very pleased. The campaign is supported by the school social project "More Heaven on Earth", which was launched in favor of the "Education brings peace" association. Since its foundation in 2006, the association has carried out numerous projects to support refugees and to promote interreligious dialogue.

The association "Education brings peace" was launched by Elisabeth Ziegler-Duregger and Lene Mayer-Kumanz. It is part of an international network organized by the United Religions Initiative (URI), which was launched in 2000 to promote peace between religions. In Austria, the URI is represented by this association, which has been doing active educational work since then, also as part of special projects for refugees. The main goals of URI include the termination of religiously motivated violence and the strengthening of justice and peace worldwide, with concrete projects such as the construction of a well in Syria for 2023.

commitment to refugees

In the context of the fasting soup campaign, Elisabeth Ziegler-Duregger explained to the pupil: Inside the importance of support for Syrian refugee camps, which suffer from the effects of the war, which has been going on for over a decade. The association has contributed significantly to support women and children in these camps in recent years by financing around 500,000 portions of soup. These donations make an important contribution to humanitarian aid, since according to uno refugee aid are about 14.8 million refugee children in school age and many have no access to education.

The income of these actions, including 6,300 euros, which were collected at the first fundraiser at Christmas time, are committed to important things, such as medical care for children and the provision of heating materials in the refugee camps. This trusting support is promoted even further by buying Christmas balls and the school advent calendar.

Education as a key to integration

Education plays a central role in the support of refugees, especially young people. Around 40 percent of all refugees worldwide are under the age of 18, but only about 65 percent of refugee children have the opportunity to attend a primary school. In contrast, 90 percent of all children in primary school age go to school. The efforts of initiatives such as "Education Brings Peace" are therefore of crucial importance for the promotion of the education and integration of refugees.

The combination of social projects and education initiatives shows how important the commitment of schools and civil society organizations is. The fasting soup campaign at the BG/BRG Lienz is not only an example of the solidarity of the school community, but also reflects the broader mission of the association to promote inter -religious dialogue and peace in an increasingly polarized world.
