New ice hockey center in Carinthia: Start of construction for women's ice cream hall!
Kärnten, Österreich - On April 9, 2025, a significant progress for ice hockey sports in Carinthia was announced. The European tender for the construction of a new ice rink for ice hockey ladies has been successfully completed. The selected construction company will begin setting up the construction site in the coming days. The first work includes the removal of asphalt and the demolition of old parts of the south side, followed by the necessary fundamental work.
The schedule stipulates that the shell of the new ice rink will be completed by the year 2025 and that the entire facility should be fully functional by the end of 2026. In addition to a modern training center for ice hockey players, the hall will also offer a multifunctional event room as well as additional training areas for ice stock sports, figure skating and young hockey. A special photovoltaic system should contribute to the energy transition in the sports area and ensure the installation of the latest technology in order to make the project sustainable. Mayor Günther Albel described the new ice rink as a lighthouse project to promote women in sport, while Governor Peter Kaiser highlighted the building as an important milestone for the sports country Carinthia.
parking situation and future advantages
During the construction period until autumn 2026, the parking situation in the area will be tense. The city administration points to the surrounding parking facilities and plans a "Kiss & Ride" zone to facilitate the traffic for the offspring. After completing the construction work, the parking situation will relax, and the hall will be an important point of contact for sports and events in the region.
representatives from the city and associations, including Klaus Hartmann, President of the Austrian ice hockey association, recognized the project as future -oriented and as a decisive step in the sustainable development of ice sports in Carinthia.
commitment to sustainability in ice hockey
In a broader context, the German ice hockey league (DEL) is actively working on the introduction of sustainability measures in ice hockey. These developments are particularly relevant because ice sports are under the influence of climate change. The DEL has introduced a sustainability concept called DEL4, which aims at four central topics: integrity in sports, youth work, anti-discrimination and the reduction of emissions.
For example, the NHL team Seattle Kraken relies on 100% renewable energy and has banned disposable plastic in its Climate Plessge Arena. Such initiatives show that the implementation of sustainable practices in ice hockey is becoming increasingly important - one aspect that is also important for the new ice rink in Carinthia. The planned technologies such as the photovoltaic system could represent a model for other projects and illustrate the relevance of sustainable building in sports.
In view of this progress, both locally in Carinthia and in international ice hockey, it becomes clear that sport not only offers a platform for athletes, but also bears responsibility for sustainable developments and climate protection.
