New slaughterhouse in Rankweil: Future for regional animal husbandry secured!

In Vorarlberg, the construction of a new slaughterhouse in Rankweil is just around the corner, which is supported with a state funding of almost three million euros. This decision that has been discussed for years comes at a time when the slaughterhouse previously operated in Dornbirn has closed. Now the farmers are forced to transport their animals to other federal states, which makes the questions about regional slaughter capacity and animal welfare becoming increasingly pressing. The SPÖ state parliament member Reinhold Einwallner expresses criticism of the high financial support and demands considerations of alternative models such as a cooperative foundation to ensure that tax money is used effectively, as orf Vorarlberg reported.

New slaughterhouse for regional needs

The planned slaughterhouse is to be built on the grounds of Markus Gstach's pig fattening and slaughterhouse and is operated by a society consisting of seven cattle suppliers. The signing of the partnership agreement is planned in the next three weeks. Construction is scheduled for autumn, with an opening at the end of February 2024. The entire project is estimated at 4 to 5 million euros, with the state of Vorarlberg committed to generous financial support. In the first phase, animals are to be delivered on two slaughter days a week, although the slaughterhouse numbers will be low compared to larger companies. However, this could lead to losses, such as Fleisch and Co emphasized.
