Fight for the Baltic Sea: Germany orders new submarines for the navy!
The inspector of the Navy, Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack, has underlined the need to procure four other submarines of the new U212 CD class to improve the security situation in Europe. This was reported by the Welt . Kaack referred to the increased threat, especially in the Baltic Sea area and along the North Atlantic Lake Connections, and emphasized that these modern submarines are equipped with an excellent range, improved sensors and the ability to use steering weapons. Germany plans to order these boats as soon as possible as part of this 4.7 billion euros in armaments project to support NATO partners in the defense of critical maritime infrastructure.
an innovative submarine design
The class 212 CD submarines, which are developed in cooperation with Norway, represent a significant further development of the German marine capacities. The two countries signed a contract for the procurement of six of these submarines in 2021, as can be seen from information from wikipedia . These submarines have a length of around 73 meters and a displacement of around 2,500 tons, which makes them much larger than the previous models. The new boats not only offer extended ranges and modern drive technology, but also have a new design that significantly reduces their visibility for hostile identification systems.
With the order of further submarines, Germany intends to significantly increase national defense ability. While Norway ordered two additional boats as early as June 2024, the Bundestag plans approval to procure the German additions, which would increase the total number to six boats per nation. The contract for ordering and building these modern submarines at Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems is in direct connection to the changing security policy landscape in Europe and the ongoing military cooperation between Germany and Norway.
