The hedgehog population in Lower Saxony and all of Europe is under pressure. The Nabu Lower Saxony again warns of the endangerment of the popular mammal. Rosa Schipper, the head of the NABU regional branch southern Lower Saxony, is concerned about the decreasing number of hedgehogs that are considered adaptable but are increasingly becoming difficulty. The main cause of this danger is the cleared landscape, in which important habit of living such as hedges, field trees and paths are missing. This forces the animals to withdraw in settlements.
In some federal states, the hedgehog is already on the pre -warning list of the Red List of endangered species. According to estimates, up to a million hedgehogs of cars are run over every year in Germany, and many animals are also victims of "hedgehog traps", such as plastic art ponds. Further dangers include lack of food in gardens, parks and green areas as well as the lack of leaves that need hedgehog for the construction of sleeping nests.

Josefine Stangenberg, another representative of the NABU, emphasizes that hedgehogs are dependent on a nutrient -rich diet that includes insects, earthworms and domestic wild bushes. The loss of habitats, especially in urban areas, has meant that hedgehogs have to dodge into increasingly insecure environments.
The growing awareness of the risk of the hedgehog is an important step to take suitable protective measures. While the hedgehogs are valued as cultural symbolic figures for clever and fortificance in Europe, it is crucial to seriously secure their survival.
