Frankfurt is planning cultural mile: New Schauspielhaus for 210 million euros!
The Frankfurt city council has made a pioneering decision: with a large majority, the path for the construction of a new playhouse in the banking district was cleared. The city will acquire a leasehold for a property on Neue Mainzer Straße from Frankfurter Sparkasse for an impressive 210 million euros, which applies over a period of 199 years. This decision represents a significant cultural step, but opinions about it are shared. While some local politicians speak of a "courageous investment in the future", there are also critical voices that feel the decision as a "decision of the century", such as Die FAZ reported.
a new cultural hotspot
Cultural director Ina Hartwig (SPD) emphasized the cultural relevance of the project and said that the development of the city center would benefit from a cultural upgrading. In addition to the new spectacle, the new construction of the opera on Willy-Brandt-Platz is also planned, which drives the creation of a new cultural mile between the Jewish Museum and the Alte Oper. The city hopes for a long-term upgrading of the cityscape and more attraction for cultural events, as before Tageschau reported.
Despite the positive voices, there are concerns about financial burdens. Experts estimate the total costs for the entire theater project could easily increase over 1.6 billion euros. Critics warn of a long -term financial burden on the city and speak of an unclear financing plan. The future architectural competition as well as the outstanding negotiations of the leasehold contract are decisive steps that could influence the progress of the project. If there are any problems here, the plans could be at risk.
