ATM bombers in Vienna: explosions shake the Danube city!
In the night of Thursday, June 12, 2025, a serious violation of public security was recorded in the 22nd district of Donaustadt. At around 3.15 a.m., two unknown perpetrators blew up two ATMs in Zschokegasse. According to the investigators, both people can be seen on video surveillance records, but no exact description of the escape has yet been given, since several people fled after the crime. So far it has been unclear how much money the perpetrators have captured, but the searches are in full swing, as [vienna.at] (https://www.vienna.at/bankomaten-in-donauststadt-in-die-gaufen-jagt reports.
This incident is not an isolated case. In 2025 there were already over 20 similar ATM in Austria that indicate a worrying trend. The investigation was initiated under the name "SOKON ATMAT" at the Federal Criminal Police Office, which has been working with the state criminal offices since March 1st to master this wave of explosions.
Investigations and groups of perpetrators
According to experts, the differences in the perpetrator's procedure suggest that there are at least five to six different groups that are active in Austria. Recent incidents have shown that the perpetrators are becoming more and more unscrupulous. For example, only on Monday, a machine was hunted up in a shopping center in Wels, which indicates the work of possibly new groups of perpetrators. In particular, one of the groups could turn out to be a professionally structured gang from Holland, as [vienna.at] (https://www.vienna.at/bankomaten-nicht-nich- Mehrer--banden-s-sich- through-osterreich/9239669) reports.
The investigation by the Federal Criminal Police Office is intensive and the cooperation with the state criminal offices is extremely important in order to counteract the multiple incidents. Since the beginning of the year, blasting at twelve crime scenes in Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Salzburg and Upper Austria have been registered. For comparison: The highlight of the ATM in the past six years was reached in 2018 with 21 acts.
