Skeleton World Cup in Innsbruck-Igls: Race canceled due to track problems!

On November 26, 2025, the cancellation of the planned Skeleton World Cup races on Friday in Innsbruck-Igls was announced. This decision was made late on Tuesday evening by the Executive Committee of the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF), after taking into account the wishes of the majority of athletes, by a vote of 30 to 21. The majority of athletes did not want to take part in the competitions because the first official skeleton training on Monday was canceled due to inadequate track preparation.

The training scheduled for Wednesday, which should have included four runs, was also deemed inadequate. One reason for these problems is that the railway was partially rebuilt. An individual competition for both men and women as well as a mixed team event were planned. However, the canceled races should be rescheduled on another track. The IBSF will announce further information about the new dates in the coming days, as reported on vienna.at.

The event in detail

The BMW IBSF Bob & Skeleton World Cup, which would originally have taken place from December 15th to 17th, 2023 in the Olympic Ice Canal in Innsbruck-Igls, is now attracting the attention of top athletes in bobsleigh and skeleton. In addition to the competitions, an exciting atmosphere and entertainment outside of the competitions are expected. Tickets for the event are available online at www.oeticket.com and from the Innsbruck Ticket Service.

As stated on inn-aktiv.at, the World Cup will be an important part of the current racing season.

Context to the Skeleton World Cup

The Skeleton World Cup is a competition series held in winter and organized by the IBSF. The overall men's World Cup winners have been determined since the 1986/87 season, while the women's World Cup has taken place since 1996/97. The World Cup season usually includes around eight stations, which are usually held parallel to the Bobsleigh World Cup. There is an award of points per race, which is crucial to the controversy surrounding the athletes' performance in this series. A detailed explanation of the points systems can be found on Wikipedia.
