Massive railway closure between Koblenz and Cologne: travelers in distress!
The run-up to Christmas brings massive restrictions for rail passengers in the region between Koblenz and Cologne. Due to necessary construction work, Deutsche Bahn has announced a total closure of the busy route between Bonn and Oberwinter. This begins on December 20th at 9 p.m. and will last until February 17th, 2025. All long-distance trains between Koblenz and Cologne will be rerouted, affecting numerous stops in Andernach, Remagen, Bonn Central Station and Cologne Central Station. Travelers have to prepare for longer journey times and additional changes, such as 24RHINE reported.
Construction work and timetable changes
Even before the major closures, there is construction work in the Cologne/Troisdorf area from the end of November to mid-December 2024, which will also lead to timetable changes. There are partial cancellations and diversions on the affected lines, including RE 8 and RB 27. These changes also affect stops such as Köln Messe/Deutz and Niederdollendorf. Replacement services will be set up for certain routes to provide passengers with the best possible support, as shown on the website vrs.de noted.
Travelers in the region should definitely allow more time and find out about the current timetables in advance, as the effects of the construction work will have a severe impact on both long-distance and regional transport. The total closure could also extend for a longer period of time, making planning for the holidays even more difficult.
