Trump warns: Patience with Putin disappears - drones over Poland!

In the middle of the increasing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, US President Donald Trump has taken sharp criticism of the Russian air strikes on Ukraine. Trump explained his patience with Russian President Vladimir Putin "quickly scored". He called for a "strong approach" of the United States in this tense situation. He also described Putin's behavior and Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj as "amazing" and changeable. Interestingly, Trump did not mention tightened sanctions against Russia, while the United States and the EU offered through punitive measures. A government representative in Washington confirmed that Trump spoke to possible punitive tariffs between 50 and 100 percent of Russian oil, especially for countries such as China and India. Trump also doubled the US import tariffs for India to 50 percent due to its oil purchases from Russia.

A particularly worrying development occurred when almost 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace on September 11, 2025, which triggered the alarm at NATO alliance partners. As a result, the Polish Air Force together with Dutch and Italian fighter jets shot three of these drones. Military circles consider it unlikely that the violation of the Polish airspace was an oversight. Trump said that this could "have been a mistake", but was anything but happy about the incidents. According to a US government agent, at least a few drones flew towards the Distribution Center for Ukrainian military aid at the Rzeszow Polish Airport.

NATO reaction and military presence

The NATO campaigns in response to the drone incident were promptly. In Poland, Article 4 of the NATO contract was activated, which triggers a consultation. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the determination of Allianz to defend every inch of her area. The military alliance has increased its presence on the eastern border, with international troops in a total of eight countries. In particular, Germany moved a brigade to Lithuania, while the fast intervention force was moved to Romania. Poland's defense budget is the highest among NATO countries with 4.5 percent of its gross domestic product.

The systematic threat of Russia has forced NATO to significantly expand its military presence in Europe. Last year, 90,000 NATO soldiers were already in use to practice an incidence of an attack on a NATO member. A total of around 80,000 US soldiers are currently stationed in Europe.

Historical backgrounds and geopolitical tensions

The tensions between Russia and the west have deep historical roots that go back to NATO east expansion. Historians point out that the NATO expansion has been interpreted by Russia since 1997, which started with the accession of former countries of the Warsaw Pact as a break of agreements from the early 1990s. The Kremlin demands that the West waive the stationing of missile defense systems and restore the 1997 NATO positions. While Ukraine is still trying to join NATO, NATO has made it clear that this step is currently not on the agenda. Putin sees a historical but also security -political component in Ukraine that influences its foreign policy.

The continuing military and political tensions are a clear sign of the fragile relationships between Russia and the West, and NATO's military activities on the eastern border show that alliance is prepared for a potential threat. Historians emphasize that there is no factual military threat to Russia by NATO, which would provide corresponding justifications for aggressive actions.
