On October 30, 2025, Robert Reinagl, who was born in Vienna, died after a long illness that left him suffering from lung cancer. The important actor was part of the ensemble of the renowned Burgtheater in Vienna for over 25 years, where he played numerous roles and left a lasting impression. His family, friends and colleagues mourn the loss of a complex artist who shone equally in theater, film and music.
The news of Reinagl's death was officially announced by the Burgtheater, whose artistic director Stefan Bachmann praised the actor's commitment. Reinagl, who was born in Vienna in 1968, began his theater career with the Wiener Ensemble under the direction of Karl Welunschek and has been part of the Burgtheater since 2000. He appeared in works by George Tabori as well as in Nestroy's “Love Stories and Marriage Matters” and worked with many important directors.
Diverse artistic work
Veronica Kaup-Hasler, Vienna's city councilor for culture, was deeply affected by Reinagl's death. She described him as a person with artistic passion and a sense of responsibility. In her message, she also expressed her condolences for the relatives. Reinagl was not only an actor, but also a committed works council member at the Burgtheater, where he stood up for the interests of his colleagues for over 20 years.
In addition to his work in the theater, Reinagl was closely connected to the music scene. He felt particularly connected to the Viennese song and performed with prominent artists such as Andy Radovan, the Neue Wiener Concertschrammeln and Tommy Hojsa. He also founded the trio “Geschwister Mondschein”, which expressed his passion for music.
A visual artist and teacher
Reinagl also worked as a teacher. He taught at the Vienna Conservatory and was a lecturer in speech formation at the Max Reinhardt Seminar. He passed on his experiences and knowledge to the next generation of actors. He was last seen in Philip Stölzl's production of “Liliom” by Ferenc Molnár in 2024 and is himself active in film and television, including in the crime series “Tatort” and the TV comedy “Bösterreich”.
