Rescue from Hell: Kidnapped Ukrainian children finally back!
On February 7, 2025, there was important news about Ukrainian children abducted to Russia. Eight of these children are now back in Ukraine, as announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's adviser Darina Tsarivna. These children, who were forcibly abducted while receiving medical treatment in Crimea, were forced to take part in pro-Russian patriotism exercises in an orphanage. They have now been rescued from a brutal kidnapping drama as part of the “Bring Kids Back” program. However, specific details about the children's return or their current whereabouts remained unclear, and there have been no reactions from the Russian side. The kidnapping of the children comes in the context of the war crimes manhunt launched by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Russian President Vladimir Putin, which accuses him of being responsible for the deportation of thousands of Ukrainian children.
Background to the problem of care leaving
In addition to the current developments, there was a specialist day in Frankfurt on June 5, 2024 on the topic of careleaving, organized by the Waisenhaus Foundation in collaboration with the Frankfurt Child Protection Association and Careleaver e.V. The event offered experts and interested parties the opportunity to discuss the challenges that careleavers face. Around 150 participants came together to exchange ideas about current legal challenges and developments in working with care leavers. Particularly valuable were the insights gained from the experiences of the care leavers themselves and the understanding that better networking between the institutions involved is necessary to improve support for young people after their time in the education and care system. The aim of the event was to also address the needs and wishes of care leavers and thus take an important step towards a better future for this group. Information on the results of the specialist day can be found in a detailed report.
Both events, the return of the abducted Ukrainian children and the specialist day on the topic of care leaving, highlight the pressing social problems and the need for comprehensive support for vulnerable groups in our society.
