Austria is preparing on: Cybercrime training center across the country!

Internet crime represents an important security challenge for Austria. As part of the ongoing criminal ceremony, cybercrime training centers (CCTC) are set up in all federal states in order to be able to better counter the challenges of cybercrime fighting. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner emphasizes the crucial role of the CCTC and emphasizes that these facilities aim to specifically prepare police officers and police officers for the requirements in the area of ​​cybercrime.

The CCTC comprises an area of ​​165 square meters and is equipped with modern training rooms and a scenarios room, which is used to use digital crime scenes for operational training. These institutions are intended to improve the IT forensics and cybercrime investigations by the police. The scenario area also serves to train data detection dogs. The CCTC regular staff currently consists of two people and is supported by 13 part -time coaches.

Training in the CCTC is divided into basic training and special training for experts. The basic training consists of seven modules that include a total of 32 teaching units. Practical exercises, such as ensuring computers and checking crypto addresses, are also part of the program. Special training is aimed in particular on specialists in the state criminal offices and the criminal assistant departments that deal more intensively with IT forensics.

Since the opening of the first CCTC in Upper Austria on June 14, 2024, 33 criminal assistant service services have already started their work nationwide. Four criminal assistant services were set up in Carinthia, while the criminal assistant service in Villach will start shortly. The approach of forming 38 regions all over Austria enables specialists to bring specialists closer to people in prevention, crime scene work and cybercrime.

The increasing relevance of cybercrime

cybercrime takes a worrying increase worldwide, which leads to a growing challenge for law enforcement authorities. In Germany and Austria, the development of cybercrime is a central topic. Cybercrime includes crimes against the Internet and the associated information technology systems. The digital traces are of great importance for investigations. Therefore, the need for qualified investigators who are familiar with IT forensics is enormously grown.

In order to counter this need, a part-time distance learning course was introduced in IT forensics/cybercrime. This course offers specific modules that impart the knowledge required to the participants in order to work independently as an investigator in the area of ​​cybercrime. The training should also ensure that graduates are able to adequately cope with the technical challenges associated with cybercrime.

The establishment of the CCTC in Austria is due to a pilot project that was launched in August 2023. The comprehensive training, which covers both theoretical and practical aspects, aims to sharpen the skills of the police forces and to improve the fight against cybercrime. With this initiative, a crucial step is taken to increase security in the digital space and to better prepare law enforcement authorities for the challenges of the future.
