Med-Club Jena closes Basement: A cultural location is lost!
The Med Club Jena closes its “basement” on Johannisplatz at the end of the year. This popular student club, which has been an integral part of student life at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena since 1972, sees itself forced to close its gates after the number of members has decreased continuously. "We regret the decision because we have put a lot of work and love into the shop, but we are now all working or have families," explains Marko Drügen, the chairman of the association. The reasons for the closure are not in financial difficulties, but are primarily due to personnel because there are no volunteers to carry out the multitude of events.
The "Basement", which opened in August 2021, was a cultural meeting point that offered events such as celebrations, lectures, live comedy and concerts. However, despite the high demand, the volunteer staff lacks to maintain this company. This closure represents a loss for the cultural scene in Jena, since it is the only voluntary cabaret of the city. The last events in the Med Club are already planned: a mulled wine evening on December 14th and the Basement Closing on December 29 with Med-Club veteran MC Spritti, such as Jenaer news reported.
a place of community
The Med Club has established itself as an important retreat for students over the years. At this central location on Johannisplatz 20, events such as parties, concerts and film evenings take place regularly, which enable students to network and exchange ideas. According to guide.in.ua , the club is also intended as a platform that helps the students to develop both personally and professionally and to promote open cooperation. Even if the closure is imminent on December 31, 2024, all planned activities will continue to run.
