Joanneum Racing Graz: With electric cars to the best placement of all time!
A remarkable success for the Joanneum Racing Team from Graz! The team, which has made impressive progress since its founding in 2003, achieved the best placement in its history with its electric racing car JR24 in Formula Student: second place in the current world rankings. This became possible after the students were able to achieve three podium places in the Czech Republic, Austria and Italy in the 2024 season ORF Styria reported. This is an outstanding result, especially compared to other renowned universities such as ETH Zurich or TU Graz, which had to lag behind the Joanneum Racing Team despite their strong competition.
Confirmation by Formula Student
The current world ranking, which was published by the organizer “Formula Student Germany”, is a confirmation of the hard work of the around 85 members of the team, who come from various degree programs at FH JOANNEUM. The head of the Automotive Technology Institute, Kurt Steiner, expressed his pride in this achievement and described the project as an example of practice-oriented teaching. With the new JR25 vehicle type, the team is already in the development phase for the next season, which will begin with the first competition in July 2025. This progress builds on the successes of previous seasons, where the team achieved two overall victories with a combustion engine racing car in 2021 and enjoyed second place in the world rankings at times.
The Formula Student is an annual competition in which students enter their self-built racing cars into the race in various classes such as Combustion Vehicle (CV), Electric Vehicle (EV) and Driverless Vehicle (DV). Participation includes both static events, in which the team gives presentations about their vehicles, as well as dynamic events such as Skidpad and Acceleration, such as Joanneum Racing explained. The Joanneum Racing Team is the first Austrian team to achieve an overall victory in the electric class, which underlines the importance and potential of these young engineers.
