Honey from East Tyrol: Golden award for best quality!

In picturesque Kals am Großglockner, honey production is flourishing thanks to the dedicated work of Sebastian Bauernfeind. The owner of the “Glocknerbiene” mountain apiary implements high quality guidelines to produce his honey, which is made from the fine nectar of the regional flora. “Glocknerbiene” products offer future buyers a pure taste experience - and not just on the breakfast table, but also on the shelves of shops such as Billa in Lienz and Matrei, in the RGO Lagerhaus Lienz, and in the Riepler farm shop in Unterpeischlach, as on dolomitenstadt.at is reported.

But production this year was not without challenges. At the Tyrolean honey awards, which took place in the Lienz district, the difficulties faced by beekeepers became clear. Sebastian Bauernfeind, who is also chairman of the RGO beekeeping department, explained that the cold weather in spring and the heavy rains severely limited the bee colonies' ability to search for nectar. Extensive quality controls were carried out and it became apparent that yields showed significant fluctuations, challenging even the best beekeepers. A total of 180 honeys were awarded bronze, silver and gold prizes, including 37 gold medals for East Tyrolean honeys. These impressive successes illustrate the top quality for which Tyrolean honey is known, according to the Tyrolean Beekeepers Association osttirol-heute.at.

The Tyrolean Honey Awards 2021 was not only an honor for the best beekeepers, but also a social campaign. The honeys submitted were mixed together to create a cuvee, the “Tiroler Gold Cuvee”, the proceeds of which go to a good cause. The net proceeds are intended to support the “Light in the Dark” campaign, which is presented during Advent. This not only underlines the craftsmanship of the Tyrolean beekeepers, but also their commitment to the community, which was highlighted by the clear communication from Ing. Reinhard Hetzenauer, President of the Austrian Beekeepers Association.
