Drosten admits: Corona mistakes and the compulsory vaccination for nursing staff!
In a current meeting before the Saxon Corona investigation committee, virologist Christian Drosten admitted serious misjudgments during the corona pandemic. Drosten, who became known as the leading explainer in German-speaking countries during this crisis, rejected the claim that he was the “architect of the Corona strategy”. He made it clear that he had only taken part in a few government meetings and explained his deep concern about the erroneous recommendation of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina from November 2021 on compulsory vaccination for nursing staff, which he described as the biggest misjudgment of his commitment. This statement was made by the Cosmo highlighted as a central aspect of the hearing.
At that time, the Leopoldina had recommended compulsory vaccination for medical staff, but it turned out that the protective effect of the vaccinations against the Omicron variant was lower than expected. Despite these errors, Drosten emphasized the positive effects of the vaccination campaign on the burden of disease and mortality. The case fatality rate in Germany fell from around 4.6% to around 0.1% before and after the vaccination campaign, meaning that vaccinations contributed significantly to reducing deaths, according to an analysis by PMC proven.
Uncertainties at the beginning of the pandemic
Drosten also admitted that the data was often “shaky” at the beginning, citing as an example an inflated estimate of the hospitalization rate in children, which the US health authority put at up to 20% in 2020. This estimate was later revised. Concerns about serious complications in children led to measures whose appropriateness was rarely discussed in public. Loud Picture Drosten also said that his repeated presence on the renowned NDR podcast was an attempt to give something back to taxpayers, which was intended to underline the transparency of his work.
The investigative committee was set up at the initiative of the AfD and aims to review the measures taken during the pandemic. These include, in particular, school closings, mandatory testing and vaccination campaigns. For Drosten, the experiences from the pandemic are also a call to separate scientific advice and political decision-making. He advocates clear differentiation in order to be able to make better decisions in the future.
Future challenges
Recent reports show that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact not only on healthcare systems but also on society. These experiences have revealed weaknesses in the German health system and highlighted the need for reform. It is clear that pandemic-related challenges, such as acute healthcare workforce shortages, are not just temporary but require long-term structural changes. PMC also emphasizes the need to educate the population about vaccines and their importance in order to increase trust in public health measures.
The investigative committee meeting was interrupted after two hours due to time constraints, and Drosten is invited to testify again at a later date. This continued discussion will be crucial to the reflection and lessons that should be learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.
