The forgotten heroes of Vienna: A look behind the scenes of the food delivery
Karlsplatz 8, Wien, Österreich - Vienna becomes the scene for a fascinating exhibition that puts the everyday work of food deliverers into the spotlight! The exhibition "Between Pick-Up & Drop Off" in the Vienna Museum opened on February 27, 2025 and offers visitors the opportunity to immerse yourself in the life of the so-called "Rider". These special suppliers of this modern period are often anonymous, but now they can share their stories with the public. The show, which will be shown by May 25, 2025, presents video or materials that show the challenges of the profession, such as precarious employment relationships, pressing time pressure, competition and the associated isolation. And all of this in the middle of the busy hustle and bustle of the city!
A look behind the scenes
The curator of the exhibition, Fabio Hofer, not only brings his curatorial expertise, but also his personal experience as an active food supplier. "I started in 2021, during the pandemic it was a good thing for me," explains Hofer. With the exhibition, he would like to clean up myths about the job of bicycle messenger and ensure more understanding in society. Many people do not know that the “riders” often have to search for the right delivery addresses for a long time - especially in large residential complexes where every floor is crucial. "The drivers are happy when ordering in the neighborhood because they get more money for it," added Hofer. This information is not only interesting for patients, but also for all those who often order food.
The food delivery services in Vienna are in the process of revolutionizing the domestic catering scene. But who are the people behind the colorful uniforms and sophisticated backpacks? This exhibition provides answers and leaves room for encounters away from the anonymous order. "Between pick-up & drop off" not only becomes an experience for those interested in art, but also offers new insights into life and the challenges of the food supplier: inside in dense urban traffic. An absolute must for everyone who wants to learn more about the interaction of enjoyment and work in the city, so orf and the Museum .
